JOB: | Multi Skilled Apprentice |
I’ve been a multi-skilled apprentice with Emanuel Whittaker for about a year now and I am really enjoying it. My apprenticeship means that I do a little bit of everything including joinery, painting, tiling and labouring but that means I am never bored and I get to understand everyone else’s job on site. I think eventually I will concentrate on joinery as that is what I enjoy most.
The best bits of the job are learning new skills and meeting so many different people.
I had some qualifications when I left school but was not really sure what I wanted to do so I decided to go to college. I did a multi-skilled NVQ level 1 and 2 in my first year and plumbing in my 2nd year. When I finished at college I thought that an apprenticeship would be the best way to get more qualifications and more importantly earn while I was learning.
I like this apprenticeship because I am learning on the job and I don’t have to do loads of theory at college. In fact I don’t go to college at all, I have an assessor that comes to see me on site and I just have to complete a questionnaire now and again. If you don’t like theory or written work this is a great way to gain qualifications.
I am currently working at the Salix Homes Blackfriars site which is really handy for me as it is not too far to travel from home. One of the good things about working for Emanuel Whittaker is that you move around and so you get to work on different sites and meet lots of different people.
My working day is usually from 8 am until 4.30 pm and we have a half day on Friday so get to finish a little bit earlier and get ready for the weekend. I think an apprenticeship is a great option for young people and it’s working out really well for me.
