JOB: | Joinery Apprentice |
Loads of my mates are unemployed and have been for ages and I was looking for a job myself for ages and so I know how lucky I am to have this apprenticeship.
I went to college for two years when I left school to do a multi-skilled course in construction. I knew I wanted to do something in construction but was not sure what and so the multi-skilled course means you do a bit of everything to find out what you like. Joinery was my favourite and that’s what I am doing my apprenticeship in.
I tried to get a job when I first left college and was looking for about a year but I couldn’t find anything. I was really lucky to be taken on by Emanuel Whittaker and I am mid-way through a three year joinery apprenticeship with them.
When I finish here I will be a fully qualified joiner which means I can get a decent job anywhere in the UK.
The company has sites around the North West and so you can be working anywhere. On this site I am learning how to lay floorboards which is something I have never done before but as an apprentice you get to do lots of different things and learn new skills. I still go to college one day a week and about half the day is spent on theory but most of my time is spent actually doing stuff and so you learn loads.
Things are getting built all the time – hospitals, houses, offices and shops – and so hopefully there will always be work for a qualified joiner which means these three year should set me up for the rest of my life.
